SUBJECT

Interstate 5 Bridge Replacement
Key Points
  • The Interstate 5 Bridge is a corridor of national significance that serves the entire west coast of the United States, and is a key economic connector between two major ports and much of the industrial land in the Vancouver-Portland Metropolitan Region.
  • The existing Interstate 5 bridges are seismically vulnerable, have inadequate bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and suffer from some of the most severe congestion on the entire I-5 Corridor, negatively impacting travel time reliability and hindering the efficient movement of people and freight.
  • Replacement of the Interstate 5 Bridge is needed to support critical trade routes, address congestion, provide transportation choices, and improve safety.

Strategic Plan Alignment

Goal 1: Ensure our built urban environment is one of the safest, most environmentally responsible and well maintained in the Pacific Northwest.

Goal 1, Objective 1.1: Develop and maintain a safe, balanced and innovative transportation system that will meet the needs of future generations.

Action 1.1.4: Actively participate in policy conversations regarding improvements to the I-5 Corridor.

Present Situation

The existing Interstate 5 Bridge is needed in order to address congestion, safety, and the efficient movement of goods and people. In 2017, the Washington Legislature passed Substitute Senate Bill 5806, which established a Legislative Action Committee to work on a bridge replacement project. The proposed Council resolution urges the Governor and Legislature to allocate resources to advance this project.
